If there's one amazing thing about Winnipeg in the summertime (...there's way more than one) it's that there's no shortage of festivals and happenings going on ALL the time! Sure, leaving the city on the weekend is always fun for adventuring and meandering through nature, but it's not a necessity at all. We're so lucky to live in a city that doesn't have a crazy hustle/bustle scene but rather it's a bumping, artistic and hub for creativity and fun!

Just as Folk Fest wrapped up (how FUN was that?) Fringe Festival began. This festival began over 50 years ago in Edinburgh, Scotland and has been entertaining audiences around the world ever since. Fun fact: The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre is the only regional theatre in Canada to produce Fringe Festival. Running from July 13 - 24 with 169 productions from across Canada and the world are being performed right here in Peg-City, there's something for everyone to enjoy. These are our favourite things about the Fringe....

1. The Performances

Alright...this is a little obvious because it's a performance art festival, but that's why we love it! We do our best to see a variety of shows from improv to comedy to storytelling and more. Performers have 100% artistic freedom and creative control on what they present and the production of their performance, so it can be a mixed bag of what you're going to get when you purchase the ticket. It's all part of the fun though and we love supporting creative expression - it's something we are very passionate about. Another important point to mention is that 100% of the box office revenue made off the shows goes directly back to the performance companies.

2. The Market

When we're not catching a show, you can find us cruising through the markets set up in the Exchange District. The clothes, the jewelry, the books and more, we love checking out what the local makers and vendors have on display!

3. The Food

Although we prefer o keep things pretty healthy over here (check out our Food for Thought recipes) everyone treats themselves sometimes, right? With no shortage of food stations set up in the Exchange District, if you're hankering for a bite of something tasty, you'll be sure to find it! Samosas anyone?

4. The Music

If funds are tight and you'd rather take in some free entertainment, that's not a problem! Settle in at Old Market Square and enjoy musical performances by a variety of artists day and night. We especially love it when a dance party breaks out!

5. The Energy

It's festivals like The Fringe Festival that contribute to a contagious BUZZ in Winnipeg over the summer - an infectious, amazing, positive energy that hovers over the 204-region and we can't get enough of it. People are out, roaming around, enjoying the sunshine (or the rain) and appreciating the Prairie summer for what its worth. We can't wait to soak it all in!

Are you going to Fringe Festival? Have you seen any plays already? We'd love to hear your recommendations on what we should see! Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
